African hubs network Afrilabs has partnered hub content provider AfriHive to for a series of Google Hangouts on hub sustainability.

Afrilabs, which is a network of 36 tech hubs in 18 countries across Africa, and AfriHive said the series will run this month in a bid to explore and understand hub sustainability, targeting different stakeholders in the hub ecosystem.

“The main goal of the dialogue is to provide a platform for targeted stakeholders to share knowledge and participate in developing best practises and models to ensure long term sustainability of African hubs,” they said.

The series look at key areas such as the necessity of hub sustainability, the relationship between impact and sustainability, and whether hubs should be driven by mission or sustainability and the respective value of programme-based funding and long-term funding.

“Hubs often find funding by delivering specific programs and activities, while they struggle to secure flexible, long term operational funding. Additionally, it can be challenging to secure local sources of funding, even as the pool of international donors remains fairly limited,” the co-organisers said.

An online hangout will take place each week on these topics, with the goal of gathering and sharing community perspectives in an effort to compile knowledge products such as best practices, case studies and articles, as well as spur conversations and practical implementations of models that contribute to sustainable hub development.

Hubs or stakeholders interested in participating in the series can sign up here.
