South African travel app startup GoMetro has been named the “Best Innovation in a Growth Market” at the 11th annual Meffys awards.
The awards – hosted by MEF in San Francisco – recognise success and innovation across the global mobile ecosystem, with this year’s awards receiving a record 250 entries from across 30 countries.
GoMetro’s mobile website – which allows users to access train times, announcements, service updates and information via their mobile phone – was selected winner of the Best Innovation in a Growth Market category from among five finalists.
“GoMetro are delighted that our vision and execution has been recognised by an international audience of our peers. This validation serves as excellent motivation to continue to grow the platform beyond our local borders and provide this African solution to other developing countries, globally,” Justin Coetzee, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of GoMetro told Disrupt Africa.
“Building on their heritage as the barometer for showcasing innovation and mobile excellence, the Meffys provide a unique window into the mobile trends and success stories transforming consumers’ lives around the world,” said Rimma Perelmuter, chief executive officer (CEO) of MEF.
The 13 category awards were judged by an independent panel of 40 journalists, academics, analysts and VCs from around the globe.
GoMetro’s Coetzee is also today competing in the final round of the Get in the Ring global entrepreneurship competition in Holland, having won the African regional leg of the competition in September.
The global champion of the competition stands to win a “World Champion” belt, and potentially may secure investment.
