Drinks delivery service Drinks on Wheels has been named winner of Startup Weekend Nairobi, the startup aiming to curb drink-driving in Kenya’s capital city.
The event took place over the weekend (December 6-7) at the Nairobi Garage, with startups forming spontaneously at the event, and asked to build a business within 54 hours.
Drinks on Wheels took first place with the service that enables consumers to call and place a drinks order, which is delivered promptly within Nairobi – the startup saying it intends to limit the current rates of drink-driving, particularly in the context of parties wanting to “refill their stock”.
Social projects integrator Boresha took second place with its platform connecting companies to individuals looking for positions in social projects, and vice-versa.
Biogas plant mapping aggregator Biogas Map won third position, assisting those looking for biogas facilities, and linking those with excess waste to accepting organisations.
The winning teams received a range of prizes including participation in the Google Developers Startup Launch Programme; office space at Nairobi Garage; Google UX architecture support; free hours with a startup lawyer; hosting credits for Amazon Web Services (AWS); Google Cloud credits; free .co website domain and hosting; as well as incubation at Nailab.
The startups formed during the event will now receive ongoing support to help them develop their businesses.
The organisers said Startup Weekend Nairobi will also be scaling over the coming year, with multiple events to be held.
