Nigeria’s Co-Creation Hub (CcHub) tomorrow launches a computing school for secondary school students, named the Geeks Club, aimed at encouraging tech innovators from a young age.
The project – supported by Google and the Raspberry Pi Foundation – officially launches tomorrow, March 11, and will see the first cohort of 150 students selected from five public secondary schools across Lagos state join the Geeks Club.
CcHub said the club aims to equip students with technical and soft skills, but on a larger scale the project hopes to contribute to addressing the digital divide by raising generations of innovators, capable of addressing local problems through their technical creativity.
Geeks Club students will be introduced to software and hardware programming, using Scratch, HTML/CSS, and Python; with the curriculum built primarily around the Raspberry Pi – due to its versatility and affordability.
Students at the Geeks Club will also receive soft skills training, focusing on skills such as as team-work and collaboration, communication, presentation and project management.
Through the partnerships with Google and the Raspberry Pi Foundation, the Geeks Club will be available for free to students from financially disadvantaged backgrounds – aimed at reducing the effects of the economic gap and providing students with an equal start in life.
CcHub asked that volunteers and schools interested in being involved with the Geeks Club should get in touch.
The Geeks Club launch will take place at CcHub tomorrow, from 12pm.
