Kenyan incubator iHub and the German Goethe Institute have opened applications for their programme funding digital art projects.
Disrupt Africa reported earlier this month the Goethe Institute and iHub were looking to fund creatives who use technology in their work, whether in conceptual or presentation processes.
The partners have since held a gathering to kick off the call for proposals, saying “attendance surpassed expectations, and we are expecting many wonderful submissions”.
“This project aims to finally engage artists and technologists in our area to engage actively with each other to collaboratively create innovative and unique art. At present, in our community the idea of tech art has failed to go beyond discussions and ideas about the value, benefits and potential,” iHub said.
The programme is calling for artists and techies to come up with proposals in the field of digital art dealing with the topic “Kenya’s Future”, with submissions able to define the interpretation of “future” as it is imagined and addressed in the art, with no one correct interpretation of the concept.
“Last Saturday’s gathering was for clarifying questions and generating engaging interactions between interested artists and techies wishing to submit – collaborative submissions were encouraged,” iHub said.
“At this event, the curation team emphasised the importance of going beyond simply submitting art conveyed technical mediums. Rather, submissions are encouraged to be creative regarding interpretations of the project theme and use of technology and art as a collaborative composition.”
Applications can be made until April 13, with successful projects selected on April 27 and exhibited in July.
