African investment club NewGenAngels has partnered international investor academy Angel Labs to hold angel investing bootcamps in Kenya and Nigeria this year.
Disrupt Africa reported last year NewGenAngels, an exclusive investment club for investors looking to invest over GBP15,000 (US$23,500) in high-growth Africa-focused companies with members from the likes of Zimbabwe, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Mozambique and Rwanda, had made investments totalling US$200,000 in three African startups in its first six months.
The partnership with Angel Labs will see summer bootcamps for high-net-worth individuals in Kenya and Nigeria during the course of this year, with the aim being to hold events across all major African cities within the next two years.
In the last year, Angel Labs has hosted events to identify and educate potential investors in 25 countries, including Sri Lanka, Jordan, Peru, Turkey, Indonesia and Qatar.
“Our partnership will help to share the best practices learned from fellow practitioners across the world,” NewGenAngels founder and chief risk officer Sean Obedih said.
“Joining forces with Angel Labs is a great step in the right direction. Our ideal local partners range from regional development banks, governments, private banking groups or family offices who are keenly interested in leveraging opportunities that are only available with early stage investing.”
Obedih said the bootcamps are designed to go beyond the technical exchange of information, also creating bridges between individual angels who can syndicate deals and share deals across borders.
“Angel investing in Africa isn’t on top of many people’s agenda in the west where the profession of angel investing has taken root for the past 25 years, it is even less discussed in emerging markets because people prefer to invest in the things that they see such as land or real estate,” he said.
“Over the past year,we have been talking to the angel communities and potential angel investors trying to find out how we can help in kickstarting a revolution in angel investing so that we can help angels to tap into these high growth opportunities.”
