DEMO Africa application deadline extended

Startup pitching competition DEMO Africa has announced a one-month extension to its application period, to allow for extra submissions resulting from the series of “mini-events” to take place in June.

The DEMO Africa competition sees 30 African startups selected to pitch live to investors, industry stakeholders and fellow entrepreneurs at a two-day event to be held in Lagos, Nigeria, in September.

The competition divides applicants into 12 categories, namely: Agriculture, Health, Education, Manufacturing, Retail, Media and Entertainment, Communication, Transport and Logistics, Energy, Finance and Banking, Water and Sanitation, Waste Management and Recycling.

Applications to pitch at DEMO Africa opened in March, and were due to close at the end of May.

However, Disrupt Africa reported last week DEMO Africa announced four “mini events” will take place around Africa, in the hope of attracting more applications for “less favoured categories” of the DEMO Africa event.

As a result, DEMO Africa today announced in order to cater for submissions resulting from these “mini events” the application window will be extended for an extra month, closing at the end of June.

The first “mini event” will be held in Nairobi, Kenya, on June 3; following which events will also take place in Ghanaian capital Accra; Harare in Zimbabwe; and Egyptian capital Cairo.

At each “mini event” selected startups will be given six minutes each to pitch their business idea to a panel of judges. Judges at each of the four events will select one startup to launch their product at DEMO Africa stage in September.
