Five startups have been chosen as winners of the Cape Town leg of the Seedstars World competition, and will now progress to the final South African event in Johannesburg.
Disrupt Africa reported yesterday pitching was taking place, with a second round of pitching will be held in Johannesburg on July 17, where the startups selected in Cape Town will go head-to-head against the capital’s startups to win a place at the global Seedstars World final in Geneva, Switzerland, next year.
The winning startups are NicheStreem, a specialised music streaming service, Custos Media Technologies, which helps media owners protect their content against piracy by detecting the original infringer using the Bitcoin blockchain, lifesaving tool mySOS, Azimuth, which provides mining companies with maps of unstable areas to minimise loss of life and damage to infrastructure, and home improvement platform RedFish.
The pitching event was hosted at 22seven’s Space Theatre, with the jury including Francesco Signoretti, chief executive officer (CEO) of lastminute.com group, Cape Town Mayoral Committee member Xanthea Limberg, Standard Bank incubation manager Linda Swart, Red Edge Ventures managing director Alex Nelson, PriceCheck CEO Andre De Wet and Marcello Schermer, regional manager for Seedstars World Africa.
“Seedstars World has evolved into a very respectful global platform. The City of Cape Town is very appreciative to be able to participate in such a great initiative,” said Limberg.
The competition’s African leg kicked off in Maputo, Mozambique, last month; where event booking and management system Moovi was named winner.
