Mobile and web church administration app Asoriba emerged the winner of the Ghanaian leg of the Seedstars World pitching competition last night in Accra, and will head to Geneva, Switzerland in February to compete for US$500,000 in equity investment.
Disrupt Africa reported earlier this week 12 startups were to pitch at the latest local Seedstars World event in Africa, following earlier legs in Mozambique, South Africa and Nigeria.
This year’s edition of Seedstars World sees the competition expanded to 50 countries – up from 36 in 2014 – with 12 African cities hosting legs of the competition.
Asoriba, a web and mobile application that enables effective church administration and seamless engagement with members, was by the panel of judges as the best startup in Ghana, and will now head to Switzerland for the final pitching round.
“This is completely unexpected for us. We are going to work even harder now to grow our business and impress in Geneva,” said Asoriba chief executive officer (CEO) Nana Opoku.
Flippy Campus, an app that helps students get timely access to information related to the academic and social life on campus, came second, while Enyinam Tech, a clean tech solution to minimise external energy inputs in power generation systems, was third.
“By virtue of participating in this event, startups expose themselves to objective feedback, a great win for them and the ecosystem at large,” said Seedstars World local ambassador Victor Ofoegbu, of Impact Hub Accra, which hosted the event. Further support was provided by MEST and iSpace, who recommended startups from their network.
Seedstars World’s next stop is Abidjan on August 12.
