Global seed-stage startup competition Seedstars World has chosen 10 startups to compete at the latest African leg in Uganda, with the winner standing a chance to win US$500,000 equity investment at the final in Switzerland in February.
Local Seedstars World events have already taken place in African countries Mozambique, South Africa, Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast and Rwanda, with the competition now heading to Kampala on September 11.
For the event, Seedstars World has formed a strategic partnership with Stanbic Bank, which alongside Google for Entrepreneurs will act as a main partner. Stanbic Bank Uganda will explore potential options for collaborations and partnerships with the participating entrepreneurs.
“As Stanbic Bank we are committed to supporting and growing small and medium size businesses that have great ideas. We are proud to be associated with Seedstars World as it promotes innovation and entrepreneurial thinking that will create employment and power the country going forward,” said Kevin Wingfield, head of personal and business banking at Stanbic Bank Uganda.
Among the 10 startups that will pitch are voice output software product Exact and Clear, location-based laundry service app Yoza, quiz app Commonsense, travel startup Roundbob, TV information mobile platform Krobits, and Health Portal Uganda, which allows specialists and practices the ability to fill their open appointment slots.
The rest of the list is made up of ticket booking app Tikiti, online radio news portal Wizarts Media, educational media platform Yaakaa Digital Network, and safe taxi-hailing app SafeBoda.
The startups will be judged by a jury consisting of Wingfield, Outbox Hub co-founder Richard Zulu, Remit.ug co-founder Stone Atwine, Finafrica director Davis Baasha, Grameen Foundation global partnerships and commercialisation strategy fellow Neil Wood, and Seedstars World regional manager for Africa Marcello Schermer.
Seedstars World Uganda takes place at Outbox Hub in Kampala on September 11 from 4pm. Those interested in attending can sign up here.
