Intership UG, a startup that allows users to make purchases from online shopping sites in the United States (US), United Kingdom (UK), Dubai and China and have their packages delivered to Uganda, has won the Ugandan leg of the Seedstars World competition.

Intership Ug beat off competition from 10 other startups at an event held at Outbox Hub, and will now represent Uganda at the Seedstars World final in Geneva, Switzerland next year, where it will compete for up to US$500,000 in equity investment.

The company currently has warehouses in US and UK, with co-founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Nielsimms Sangho saying the team was delighted to have the opportunity to compete with some of the best minds in the world at the global final.

“There have been gaps in meeting the needs of SMEs and individuals who need to ship goods into the country and it is on the basis of this that we developed a solution that will enable us act as a middleman for SME’s and individuals,” he said.

Online radio news portal Wizarts Media came second, with Safe Boda, an app that helps users pick safe bodaboda riders, taking third place. The top three startups walked away with a host of free software tools, one year of mentoring on brand strategy and public relations by Corporate Image and three months of free keywords on shortcode provided by Africa’s Talking.

The other eight startups to take part were voice output software product Exact and Clear, location-based laundry service app Yoza, quiz app Commonsense, travel startup Roundbob, TV information mobile platform Krobits, Health Portal Uganda, which allows specialists and practices the ability to fill their open appointment slots, ticket booking app Tikiti, and educational media platform Yaakaa Digital Network.

Local Seedstars World events have already taken place in African countries Mozambique, South Africa, Nigeria,Ghana, Ivory Coast and Rwanda, with the competition’s next stop Nairobi, Kenya.
