Healthcare innovation startup wins NigeriaCom pitching event

Pharmaceutical software consultancy company AGCNigeria emerged the winner at the Entrepreneur’s Hub pitching event held at NigeriaCom in Lagos yesterday, winning the opportunity to join other regional winners at the AHUB in Cape Town in November.

Disrupt Africa reported earlier this month five startups had been selected to pitch at the Entrepreneur’s Hub, organised through a partnership between Informa, Nigeria’s Wennovation Hub and Disrupt Africa.

More than 80 startups applied for one of the five pitching slots, with Rubiqube Advertiser, AGCNigeria, Online Agro-Trade and Networking Platform, PhisioOnCall, and CrowdPenny eventually chosen to pitch in front of a panel at NigeriaCom.

AGCNigeria came out on top for its GenRX product, which helps pharmacy stores manage their drugs inventory by employing tech to let them know which drugs are set to expire. The startup will now pitch at the inaugural AHUB at AfricaCom in Cape Town in November, a dedicated event for African startups and entrepreneurs linked to the main conference.

Prior to the pitching, mentorship meetings were held with Nigerian network operators sharing advice on scaling a business, reaching target audiences, reducing capex and sourcing funding.

“The quality of applications received is an indication of the creativity and innovation embedded in African startups,” the partners said.

“Every entry is plausible but there is a limit to the number we can accommodate at the maiden edition. We strongly hope the next edition will accommodate more entrants so that all those great ideas that do not make this year’s edition can sprout up to the stage.”

Fifteen other startups were selected for year-long mentorship at Wennovation Hub.

Disrupt Africa reported in May on the Entrepreneur’s Hub at East AfricaCom in Nairobi, Kenya, where Kenyan matatu (minibus taxi) rating app MyRideKenya was named Startup of the Year and earned their place at the AHUB.

MyRideKenya allows passengers using public transport vehicles to rate vehicles and their staff, share content files – such as pictures or video files -, and chat to other passengers.  The app aims to make public transport in Kenya safer, and more comfortable.
