Zimbabwean incubator Muzinda Hub has selected 10 startups shortlisted for its inaugural business plan competition, having received applications from 20 countries across Africa.

Disrupt Africa reported last month Muzinda Hub announced it would host its first business plan competition, asking entrepreneurs with web or app based product ideas to apply for the chance to have their solutions developed.

The hub said the competition had seen an “overwhelming response”, receiving applications from 20 countries in Africa.

10 startups have now been shortlisted, and will pitch head-to-head via a live stream event, to a panel of judges located across the continent.

The judges will select the top five candidates who will have their proposed software services and products built for free by the Muzinda Hub development team.

The 10 shortlisted candidates are itooknow.me – a web based platform providing tools and content for tertiary education; BizeX, an online platform linking startups to venture capitalists; the Quickdeliva platform promising to deliver products bought via the platform in under an hour; Haynum travel – an online platform that cuts travel costs of individual travellers by pooling their funds; and the iLoc8 geo-tagging app that locates a requested good or service.

The other shortlisted candidates are AgriMine – an app focused on the mining sector allowing investors to buy and sell shares, and giving information that aids the investors to make decisions; the SafeTravel mobile phone geo-tagging application where users can notify friends of developments as they travel; the ChildMinder app that monitors child’s health indicators and allows parent to make daily health savings into a mobile wallet for use when child gets sick; Workerbee – an app that connects informally skilled labourers and those in need of their services; and QIU – a business directory for small businesses focused on the continent.
