ABAN brings angel investor masterclass to Cairo

The African Business Angel Network (ABAN) has hosted the first Egyptian edition of its Angel Investor Masterclass, bringing together the local investor community to explore issues across the investment spectrum.

ABAN’s Angel Investor Masterclass series was launched last year – with inaugural events in Nairobi and Cape Town -, and aims to mobilise regional early-stage investing communities.

Disrupt Africa reported recently ABAN announced the series would be expanded to Egypt and Nigeria; having already hosted successful events in Kenya, Somaliland, and Cameroon this year.

The Cairo-based event took place last week, with Swiss angel investor Balz Roth leading the workshop, sharing with delegates his expertise in deal sourcing and investment structuring, business model engineering, and strategy development.

“I am impressed about how lively and energetic the startup scene in Cairo is. I’m really impressed! I’m sure we will see more and more successful international startups branching from this community,” said Roth.

Egyptian angel investor and fund manager Khaled Ismail also led a session on the local investment scene.

“The positive response and enthusiasm of the Cairo angel investor community is indicative of what we are seeing across the continent,” said David van Dijk, director general of ABAN.

“The African early-stage investment community can not only learn a lot from the experience of our European counterparts, but can also share a wealth of local experience which, in turn, can help to improve international angel investor practice.”
