Nigeria’s EduRecords expands to UK, US after strong start

Nigerian educational record management startup EduRecords is in the process of incorporating in the United Kingdom (UK) and United States (US) after seeing strong growth since its launch in Lagos.

Launched earlier this year, EduRecords tracks a variety of outcome metrics to drive academic performance and help improve programme design and delivery.

The startup uses blockchain technology to provide a teaching and learning environment that strengthens the link between students and coursework.

Founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Olatunde Ogunlade first noticed there was a problem with education in Nigeria when he was required to validate his educational certificates for a job back in 2016.

“I went back to my primary school. There was no document stored or kept anywhere to ascertain my studentship with the school,” he said. “All the papers kept were not readable.”

The process demonstrated to Ogunlade that there was a problem with recordkeeping in the Nigerian education space, and he began to analyse what could be done. Nine years later EduRecords began development, and the startup was incorporated back in April.

EduRecords helps schools store student records and track results, offering parents access to data on the performance of schools in their area. Uptake was immediate upon launch, with the startup registering over 10,000 users within three months.

It was subscribed to by the Lagos state government, and is in the process of expanding to other parts of the country. It will expand to Ghana in 2018 before heading to other countries in Africa, and is in the process of incorporating in the UK and US.

Its revenue model is based on subscription and consultancy fees.

“Every parent subscribes for their ward’s information to be seen and managed through our platform. We also provide technical analytics to agencies and government for planning and developmental purposes,” Ogunlade said.

“Our mobile adult education solution is strictly on subscription. Each student subscribes to have access and participate in the lecture progress. We have entered into partnership arrangement with both private schools and government that gives us wider coverage of the country.”
