South African startups ThisIsMe and The Sun Exchange were among the winners at this year’s Africa Fintech Awards, which recognise the major players in the financial services space.
The awards take place each year, recognising the big achievers in the fintech sector and bringing together banks, investors and startups. This year’s event took place at the Finance Indaba in South Africa.
ThisIsMe was named joint best fintech company of 2017, tying with Easy Equities after two days of pitching battles and an extensive voting process that involved the public. ThisIsMe also claimed the Innovative Banking title.
The Sun Exchange, meanwhile was the winner in the Blockchain/Bitcoin category. Other winners included FNB, Satrix, Ovamba and Kocela.
ThisIsMe co-founder David Thomas said the startup had differentiated its offering by using machine learning for tamper detection and enhanced due diligence, and was able to perform high volume checks in real-time.
“The business is growing and we plan to attract new talent; we are growing globally into Africa and other markets and we are constantly enhancing our technology. We are grateful to be winning a number of awards including the highly regarded Best African Fintech Award for 2017,” he said.
