Egyptian e-health startup Hospitalia has won a place at the global final of the Seedstars World competition after the MENA regional summit, where it will compete against startups from all over the world for US$500,000 in equity investment.
Seed-stage startup competition for emerging markets Seedstars World is selecting national winners from all over the world, and hosted African events in Kenya, Ghana, Tanzania, Egypt, Morocco, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Angola, The Gambia, Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Cape Verde, Tunisia, Malawi, Cameroon, Mauritius, Uganda, Libya, Zimbabwe, Ivory Coast, Mozambique, Zambia, Mali, Botswana, Nigeria, Namibia, Cape Town and Johannesburg.
These startups have been convening at regional summits, with the Africa regional summit in Johannesburg earlier this month seeing 11 startups selected to take part in the global final in Switzerland in April next year. North African startups, meanwhile, pitched at the MENA regional event in Casablanca, Morocco on December 12.
There, eight startups were selected to progress to the global final, among them Egyptian winner Hospitalia. The Cairo-based startup is a one-stop integrated healthcare platform dedicated to home healthcare services for geriatrics. Hospitalia joins Ebutler (Qatar), Kenz (Palestine), Hayatech (Bahrain), Otaxi (Oman), Quantum (Saudi Arabia), Optiyol (Turkey), and Debito (Qatar) in securing places at the global final.
The Seedstars Summit in Lausanne will in April convene all of these regional winners to pitch for the chance of securing US$500,000 in equity investment, as well as a host of other prizes.
Meanwhile, five African startups have been selected to pitch at Seedstars’ Migration Challenge Startup Competition, which will take place in January in Quito, Ecuador. Ten companies, all of them working to improve migration systems, have been selected to take part, including Mauritius’ Talenteum, South Africa’s Digemy and Maxicash, Kenya’s M-Shule, and Rwanda’s BAG Innovation.
The winner of the event will receive the Migration Entrepreneurship Prize at the Seedstars Summit in April, and benefit from three months of access to an investment readiness programme. Four other finalists will have the chance to attend the summit.
