The Nairobi developer community was hosted by BudPay, a leading payment processor this past Saturday.

The event was designed to attract developers eager for chances to demonstrate their coding prowess, discover new technologies, and connect with other developers. It was themed themed “FINTECHATHON”.

Wale Hassan, BudPay’s CEO, shared that the goal was to encourage innovation and creativity by giving developers and fintech enthusiasts access to the company’s technology infrastructure which will allow participants to build applications that can interact with BudPay’s products and services.

Payments, i.e. Instant Payments, Money Transfers, Public Finances, E-commerce, Insurtech and  Fin-edutech was the theme focus of the Fintechathon.

Participants were grouped into teams and each team delivered captivating pitches, demonstrating their ingenuity and the potential of their technologies to disrupt various industries. Their innovativeness and creativity to resolve a practical issue were assessed by the judge which included IT enthusiasts, industry experts, and seasoned professionals..

Simba Pay, developed by Mr Gaseema Ndung’u, took home the $1,000 USD cash prize as the “FINTECHATHON” winner, while LifeLine, led by Mr David Abolaji Ger and Express Shoppers led by Mr Brian Keya finished second and third, winning $700 USD and $500 USD respectively.

Bassey Etimbuk, BudPay’s COO, expressed his excitement at each team’s idea and their commitment to its success during the prize presentation. He highlighted that all winners have access to BudPay’s resources to assist in their business growth.

BudPay indeed has contributed to the development of East Africa’s Startup Ecosystem through this event and a well deserved congratulations to the management team for its success.
