Cape Town Future Cities Hackathon to address water crisis, mobility

0
By Gabriella Mulligan on February 19, 2019 Events, Southern Africa

Startupbootcamp AfriTech (SBC AfriTech) and financial services provider RCS are set to host the Future Cities Hackathon in Cape Town on March 1-2, challenging local innovators to develop solutions to the water crisis, ocean pollution, and urban transportation.

Over the course of two days, attendees will be asked to form five to 10 teams tackling different challenges.  The focus will be on addressing three of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): SDG 6 -clean water and sanitation; SDG 11 – sustainable cities and communities, with a particular focus on mobility; and SDG 14 – life below water.

The hackathon will feature several top-level keynote speakers discussing the challenges brought about by pollution, water access and urbanisation.

Taking Cape Town as the test lab, the teams will be tasked with finding practical solutions that could be further developed and implemented with the support of sponsors and partners.  High-level mentors will be on hand to coach the teams, and refine their ideas.

The event is open to students, startups, professionals, and anyone with ideas for solving the most pressing sustainable development challenges facing the world today.

“RCS is excited to once again be part of the Hackathon initiative and we unequivocally support and believe in our local startups in finding the most sustainable solutions for these challenges,” says Regan Adams, chief executive officer (CEO) of RCS.
