Voting in this year’s Tech Trailblazers Awards competition closes tomorrow night (January 16), with two African companies nominated for an award.

Kenya’s healthcare IT solutions provider Fortis Innovations is one of five companies nominated for the Emerging Markets Trailblazer Award, alongside Nigeria’s home-grown smartphone handset producer Nerve Mobile.

The three other nominated companies competing against Fortis and Nerve for the award hail from Argentina, Mexico and Singapore.

The Emerging Markets Award is one of 12 awards focusing on various categories, namely, big data, cloud, emerging markets, fintech, internet of things, mobile, networking, security, storage, sustainable IT, virtualization, and the firestarter award for startups two years and younger, and below series A funding.

While a panel of judges selected the shortlisted nominees, members of the public can vote online for the final winners.

“We look forward to announcing the winners soon, and with only [a]day left to vote we await the final scores on the doors to round the competition off. We’ve seen such a high standard of compelling technologies this year across all categories, including some fantastic ideas and solutions in our newcomer areas of FinTech and IoT (Internet of Things),” said Rose Ross, chief trailblazer and founder of the awards.

Award winners will receive a range of prizes which the organisers value at US$50,000 – although the details have not been released.

All nominees are automatically included in a regional cup award, with the chance to win region-specific prizes.
