Raspberry Pi based power consumption tracker Energy/Power Monitor won both prizes available at Nigerian incubator Co-Creation Hub’s (CcHub) recent Raspberry Jam event.
Disrupt Africa reported the Raspberry Jam event was to take place at CcHub with the aim of showcasing Nigeria’s growing maker community, with a number of Pi innovators demoing their projects to attendees.
Attendees were asked to vote for the “Most Innovative” and “Most Likely to Use” projects, with local startup Dawn Fuel’s “Energy/Power Monitor” winning both US$50 prizes.
The Energy/Power Monitor keeps track of energy consumption regardless of whether originating from the grid, inverter or generator. The information can be used to verify bills, but also allows for equipment to be better maintained – for example, by improving the battery life of an inverter by using the data to track and moderate consumption.
In second place was Otomatik Server, a portable mobile education server which provides students with access to educational resources without needing an internet connection. Otomatik contains an e-library as well as examination paper database; with students connecting to the Otomatik wireless network without having to have their own internet connection.
Alongside the demos, attendees were given the chance to hack the game “Minecraft”, by adding their own objects or messages to the game.
A further competition invited attendees to pitch as to why they deserve to win a Raspberry Pi kit, with two final year engineering students taking packages to base their final year projects on, while one kit went to a graduate intending to build a remote surveillance system.
