Cape Town seeks startups to revolutionise informal trading

The City of Cape Town is calling for startups with possible solutions to its urban challenges to assist it in revolutionising informal trading in the city.

South African startups have until April 16 to send in their submissions of creative solutions to empower the informal trading sector to the Economic Development Department, which says it is opening up the city to businesses and entrepreneurs that can transform public services, accelerate innovation and leverage public spending more effectively.

“Cape Town aims to revolutionise informal trading in the city. By improving infrastructure, optimising site management and enhancing the customer experience, the impact of this challenge will be felt across the city,” the City of Cape Town said.

“From vendors of fresh food, to mobile phones or tourist souvenirs, Cape Town traders and their customers will benefit from logistically simpler, more secure and more lucrative trading.”

The city said it is keen to hear from solutions that would help them meet the needs of all stakeholders, including traders, formal businesses, customers and city authorities.

“These may be innovative operational or management practices from other cities or organisations dealing with similar opportunities. Alternatively, solutions may make trading areas more appealing to the public and so improve the customer experience,” it said.
