Five African startups – four from Nigeria and one from Ghana – have been chosen to take part in the app developer competition being hosted at the Mobile West Africa event in Lagos, which begins today.

Disrupt Africa reported earlier this month Mobile West Africa was taking place for the fifth year, featuring an app developer competition in which five developers will compete for a selection of prizes, including an iPad, NGN10,000 (US$50) in vouchers from SureGifts, and handsets from InnJoo.

Four Nigerian apps have been selected to take part: MOBicure, which has designed an app that enables parents to monitor their child’s health, Taja, which utilises software to move traditional brick and mortar stores into the mobile age, Genii Games, which has built a range of mobile apps and web videos dedicated to the promotion and preservation of indigenous African cultures among children, and e-learning tool WhizApp.

The list of competitors is completed by Ghanaian events app Suba, which collects pictures taken at events by all attendees in one photostream. Disrupt Africa reported earlier this year Suba plans to launch in Nigeria this year, as well as Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and the American cities of Miami and New York.

The Mobile West Africa agenda also includes a panel discussion with representatives from Eskimi, Saya, Jovago, Supermart.ng and Kaymu discussing what can be done to ensure a higher rate of success for West African startups.

Conference organiser All Amber has announced it has secured a selection of international and local partners for the event, including MTN Nigeria, Airtel Nigeria, Etisalat Nigeria, VConnect, Gidi Mobile, Opera Software, MoboFree, Uber, MyMusic, Basebone, Mozilla, Wiko Mobile and MTech Communications. Disrupt Africa is also a media partner for the event.
