Newsreader app Headlines Africa launched in Nigeria

Nigerian-founded news aggregation app Headlines Africa has gone live in Nigeria, looking to gather and organise news from the major media outlets on the continent and allow users to receive news tailored to their interests.

Headlines Africa has been founded by a small team of Nigerian technology entrepreneurs and is available on the Apple ITunes Store or on the Android Play Store.

The app looks to gather, organise and present news from leading local media outlets in every African country, with users able to filter news by country, region, and category. It currently covers about 80 per cent of the top 10 African countries based on GDP, with more countries to be added in the coming months.

“Today there are several dedicated news apps and websites on the market, but none of them really cater to the African news consumer,” Headlines Africa said.

“They mostly cover a few breaking news stories in a sparse “Africa” section of their news sites, but the average African consumer wants to know other things like when Uber becomes available in their city, or if that new sushi joint lives up to the hype. The average African consumer has to work harder to get their daily news, and Headlines Africa makes this process easy for them.”

The founders also hope to drive awareness and encourage action on social causes, such as freedom of the local press and #BringBackOurGirls. These social causes will have a news platform that supports their campaigns and drives change.
