Kenyan startups BuuPass, a transportation platform, and mTek, a leading insurance provider, have announced a partnership aimed at enhancing the travel experience for customers through the integration of comprehensive trip insurance.

Founded in 2016 by Sonia Kabra and Wyclife Omondi, BuuPass is a B2B2C mobility marketplace that enables users to search, compare, and book travel tickets via web, app, or USSD, while its SaaS platform helps bus operators manage their operations, inventory, and sales.

So far, the startup has sold over 16 million travel tickets and generated over US$100 million in total value of goods sold, while it has also taken part in the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa and been backed by the Google for Startups Black Founders Fund. It also acquired counterpart QuickPass earlier this year.

mTek, meanwhile, was launched in 2020, and is a digital platform that provides an entirely paperless ecosystem for the insurance industry, and allows customers to purchase insurance directly from the insurer, compare insurance policies and file claims through their smart devices. mTek users have a wide range of insurance services to select from, with offerings from 35 Kenyan underwriters. It secured a US$3 million funding round in 2022.

The collaboration between the two marks a significant step forward in providing travellers with added safety, peace of mind, and convenience. By combining BuuPass’ user-friendly platform with mTek’s insurance solutions, the partnership creates a seamless and secure booking experience.

Customers can now purchase mTek’s trip insurance directly from the BuuPass platform when booking their bus tickets. The insurance covers accidents and medical emergencies, offering financial protection and support in case of unforeseen incidents.

“We are thrilled to partner with mTek to offer our customers the added security and peace of mind that comes with travel insurance. This collaboration aligns with our mission to provide the most convenient and reliable travel solutions in East Africa,” said Sonia Kabra, CEO of BuuPass.

“We are excited to collaborate with BuuPass. This partnership aligns with mTek’s vision of providing accessible and comprehensive insurance. It offers travelers financial protection and peace of mind in case of unexpected incidents,” said Bente Krogmann, CEO of mTek.
